What genuinely changed
- Prototypes are nearly free. A testable version of an idea now costs days. That changes decision-making more than it changes engineering — stakeholders react to real screens instead of debating hypotheticals.
- The boring 60% evaporates. Forms, CRUD, API plumbing, boilerplate tests: AI writes these faster than any human, and reviewing them is quicker than writing them.
- One person goes further. A designer who codes (or an engineer who designs) can carry a small product from concept to working build in days.
What didn't change
- Architecture is still a human job. AI optimises locally; systems fail globally. Data models, sync, offline behaviour, cost of scale — someone senior has to own the shape of the thing.
- The last 20% is still the hard 80%. On a recent product, the AI-assisted prototype validated the idea fast — and then our engineers rebuilt and hardened the complex components the AI simply couldn't deliver. That hand-off is the whole game.
- Taste. AI happily generates a mediocre version of anything. Knowing what not to ship remains the most valuable skill in the room.
